Celebrate Spring!
Monday April 16, 2012
I.) Core Activity:
-Pre-K: students in this cohort will engage in a review as several of them are returning from time spent abroad.
-Kindergarten: this week begins a wonderful, real life exploration of what the coming of spring means and how we as a class will celebrate and enjoy it. To make the experience more enjoyable throughout the week students will first start to learn and practice relevant spring vocabulary e.g flowers, butterflies, rain, puddles etc. During the couse of this unit students will be given a copy of the flashcards we use in class to practice and have fun with at home.
Tuesday April 17, 2012
Pre-K: today students will be introduced to our new spring vocabulary, unlike their friends in the Kindergarten class the vocabulary expecations will be modified to include only three core words: spring, butterflies and flowers, learning other vocabulary will be encouraged but no insisted upon. What is hoped for during the course of this week is that students make the connections between what is being spoken about in English to what we they are doing in class and in the greater world e.g planting flowers, enjoying the spring weather.
Kindergarten: today students will select from a variety of flower seeds which they would like to plant and grow in our individual garden. This activity is meant to be a fun and very hands on way of experiencing/celebrating spring. Students will engage in very deliberate choice making, measurement and maths practice as well as have something to care for in the coming months.
Wednesday April 18, 2012
Pre-K: today students will select from variety of flower seeds and plant their own indvidual flower. This activity already carried out with the older students will be somewhat modified in two key ways: the flower pots are smaller for better handling and the teacher will do most of the planting so the 'mess factor' with the soil is minimized!
Kindergarten: inspired by their real life flower garden and still practicing their vocabulary skills and need to always generalize what they have learned to greater contexts students will make a visual spring vocabulary quadrent featured words: sping, weather, flowers and birds/butterflies. The visuals will come from a variety of magazines, students will find and select what they want----pupils in this class particularly love this.
Thursday April 19, 2012
Pre-K: in preparation for the upcoming International Kindergarten Day celebrations will create a special oversized flower and handprint wall hanging. This activity involves painting with a stencil flower and allows students to select, mix and change colours as they please resulting in an individually unique creation. This activity may take two days for this cohort.
Kindergarten: same project as pre-k cohort, more emphasis placed on reading the poem together during circle time.
Friday April 20, 2012
Pre-K: students today will finish their International Kindergarten Day wall hangings and have a choice of a free game/play day.
Kindergarten: today students will complete (resume after two weeks absence) their weekly 'Friday Review.'
