Aunts, Uncles & Cousins-Extended Family
Planned for Outcomes:
a.) Verbal:
-Pre-K: Continued practice with “I have.”
-Pre-K: Introduction to counting and numbers as it applies to real life situations e.g food, family members etc.
-Kindergarten: ability to state how many siblings/family members they have and their respective ages. Emphasis here on full, complete and polite sentences.
b.) Cognitive:
-Pre-K: solid understanding of the nuclear family unit. Understanding through bilingual instruction of extended family such as cousins.
-Kindergarten: basic understanding of family hierarchies as they occur in the English language. A basic understanding of lineage.
c.) Behavioural:
-Everyone: ability to “connect” to the music rehearsed through vocals and body language in a meaningful way.
WEEKLY LESSON PLANS:
Monday 20 February, 2012
I.) Core Activities:
-Kindergarten: Award rewards for good behavior as part of our new behavior management programme. As part of this today students will be introduced to our new good behaviour chart (see “Welcome” page for more details. Family vocabulary review in preparation for tomorrow’s Family tree Activity.
-Pre-K: review family member vocabulary (simplified: Mother, Father, Grandfather and Grandmother.’ ) Begin movie of the Week “Shrek Forever After.”
This week both cohorts of students will be rehearsing quite intently for our Mother’s Day Gala. The preschool cohort is expected to learn the body language movements (and if possible the lyrics) to our song “You are my Sunshine,” whereas the Kindergarten cohort is expected to learn the lyrics and associated body language. Rehearsals occurring all this week.

I.) Core Activities:
-Kindergarten: today we will begin our exciting Family Tree Project for which students have brought pictures of their family members to share and create a project with. Depending on the amount of pictures this activity may take just today or continue tomorrow.
-Preschool: will be doing a modified family tree project, because they are learning for meaning and not just memorizing we will be making a paper doll family that is specific to the student’s family demographic. Today will be spent colouring and verbally indentifying family members, this project may extend into tomorrow.

I. Core Activities:
-Kindergarten: If necessary continuation of Family trees, if not, today students will extend their knowledge of English language vocabulary to include: Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. This will be conducted bilingually in Russian and English for optimal understanding and meaning.
-Pre-K: continuation of the paper doll families, today students will paste their families into picture scenes/photo frames.

-Pre-K: will begin learning about Cousins, Aunts and Uncles, the matching game played by the older cohort modified to meet their learning needs.
